Alex Makarov is a Ukrainian-born filmmaker, art director, visual effects artist, editor, colorist, and multidisciplinary visual storyteller with more than 15 years of experience in television, film, branded content, and international media production. He is the founder and creative head of Makarov Studios.
Makarov’s work combines directing, art direction, cinematography, editing, color grading, visual effects, sound design, and post-production supervision. Across his career, he has developed a reputation as a creative leader capable of guiding projects from concept and visual development through filming, post-production, and final delivery.
His television background includes work connected to major Ukrainian national broadcasters and high-profile entertainment formats, including Inter TV Channel, STB, 1+1, Novyi Kanal, M1, and 112 Ukraine. His notable projects include Big Dances / Velyki Tantsi on Inter TV Channel, The Bachelor, Battle of the Psychics, The X Factor, CUBE, MasterChef, So You Think You Can Dance, Hell’s Kitchen, and War of the Worlds: Auditor vs. Boss. Public background materials describe Big Dances / Velyki Tantsi as a national prime-time entertainment project broadcast by Inter TV Channel in 2013.
During his work with STB TV Channel, Makarov served in a critically important visual and creative role, contributing to the artistic identity of major in-house productions. According to Oleksandr Serbin, former Chief Designer and Head of the Design Department at STB TV Channel, Makarov helped shape the visual language of flagship shows including The Bachelor and Battle of the Psychics, and also contributed to projects such as X-Factor, MasterChef, So You Think You Can Dance, Vikna, and CUBE. Serbin described Makarov’s expertise as significantly exceeding the average level of specialists in art direction and visual production.

A separate recommendation from Kseniya Bugrimova, former Executive Producer and Chief Director at STB TV Channel and later CEO of 1+1 Production Studio, confirms Makarov’s leading and critically important contribution to the first season of The Bachelor on STB. She stated that Makarov led the visual design team and was responsible for the development, execution, and oversight of the show’s graphic and visual promotional campaign, including art direction, directorial decisions, motion and video design, animation, color grading, and final quality control.
In the motion picture field, Makarov has worked with Apparatus FX, a high-end visual effects studio serving the global film industry. Through Apparatus FX, he contributed in lead and critical VFX capacities to five motion picture projects: Worldbreaker, Muzzle: City of Wolves, RUN, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, and The Killing Cove. These projects included internationally distributed feature films and streaming releases, with Worldbreaker starring Milla Jovovich and Luke Evans, directed by Brad Anderson, and Muzzle: City of Wolves starring Aaron Eckhart.
According to Edy H. Enriquez, Head and Co-Founder of Apparatus FX, Makarov performed in a lead and critical capacity on these productions, which achieved substantial industry recognition and commercial distribution. Enriquez noted that Makarov’s work involved senior-level expertise in 3D integration, advanced compositing, and the integration of emerging AI-assisted tools, including Runway, into the production workflow. He further stated that Makarov was assigned some of the most technically complex visual effects sequences on Worldbreaker, including shots that had proven too difficult for other specialists to complete within production constraints.

Enriquez also described Makarov as standing among the small percentage of VFX professionals whose technical mastery, artistic judgment, and reliability place them well above the level ordinarily encountered in the profession. In his professional opinion, Makarov’s sustained high-level contributions, lead and critical roles, and consistently superior results demonstrate extraordinary achievement in the motion picture industry.
This assessment is also supported by Alex Popov, Co-Founder of Apparatus FX, who described Makarov as a visual effects professional whose record of achievement and level of recognition are significantly above that ordinarily encountered in the field. Popov emphasized Makarov’s work on Worldbreaker, Muzzle: City of Wolves, RUN, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, and The Killing Cove, noting that his responsibilities went beyond execution and directly influenced visual storytelling and final delivery.
Makarov’s work in the United States also includes collaboration with ISINA Academy Inc., where he has served as an Art Director on artist-development, podcast, interview, live event, and media projects. His responsibilities have included directing, filming, editing, color correction, post-production, visual development, motion design, sound design, and creative supervision. Oleg Shmelev, Executive Producer and Founder of ISINA Academy Inc., described Makarov as an important member of the company’s creative and production team, contributing to projects involving artists and guests such as Took4Granted, Renzo, Sam Pounds, Iacopo, 8Teen, Retro E, Verity, Sophia Perez King, and Davix Furman.
Makarov has also worked directly on the visual and audiovisual production of the Steve Owens Show on the ISINA platform. Steve Owens, Head of the Music Department at Media Artists Group, described Makarov as a high-level Art Director and Visual Producer who manages the audiovisual production pipeline, including video direction, editing, color grading, visual environments, sound design, and coordination of production teams.
Walter Afanasieff, a Grammy-winning music producer, composer, and arranger, also evaluated Makarov’s work through ISINA and Apparatus FX. Afanasieff described Makarov as a multidisciplinary creative leader who understands how directing, editing, cinematography, sound, color, visual effects, and art direction work together to elevate a project. He emphasized Makarov’s ability to combine technical mastery with creative authorship and stated that professionals with this range are rare and highly valuable.
In addition to his commercial and entertainment work, Makarov has developed socially meaningful and independent creative projects. He directed and creatively supervised Selfmade Bear, a pilot project commissioned by Garant LTD, and collaborated on a volunteer music video project for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Cinematographer Anatolii Sakhno described Makarov as a multidisciplinary creative professional with command of directing, art direction, editing, sound, and post-production.

Makarov is also a member of the National Filmmakers Association of Ukraine. The association officially confirmed his membership in 2026 and recognized his professional experience in television and film production, his work with national broadcasters and major clients, and his educational contribution through his film and post-production school.
