WELCOME TO MAKAROV STUDIOS

Alex Makarov is a well-known director of Ukrainian origin who has been actively working on large-scale projects for top companies worldwide for over 15 years. Among these projects are «Megasoorts» for National Geographic, two pilots for NETFLIX, collaboration with Digital Domain on special effects for «Pirates of the Caribbean,» a promotional campaign for «Big Dance» on Inter TV channel, «War of the Worlds: Auditor vs. Boss» on Novy channel, «Hell’s Kitchen» on 1+1 channel, X-Factor, KUB, «Battle of the Psychics,» and «The Bachelor» on STB channel, among many others. All these projects are absolutely different, but without a doubt, they are united by the director’s original vision.

Throughout his career, Alex Makarov devotes a significant amount of time to education: despite successful projects, the director continues to study video editing (Walter Merch is a great friend and teacher). Alex works extensively with actors, studying and promoting various techniques, but still prefers the Stanislavski and Chekhov methods.

For over 20 years, Alex has focused on 3D animation in Maya and 3ds max. At one time, the director taught at Sasha Dorogova’s school and later at Animation Mentor in San Francisco.

However, a special place in Alex’s career is occupied by color correction. Having studied all programs specializing in grading, in 2008 Alex settled on DaVinci Resolve and dedicated a lot of time to mastering this program with the best of the best. As Alex says, despite DaVinci’s technical capabilities, especially in the new versions with the implementation of neural network algorithms, the key to success lies in understanding color and frame composition. And this understanding can only be achieved through drawing and painting. Therefore, Alex Makarov continues to pay special attention to work in the art workshop, painting with oil paints on canvas.
Studying color correction and DaVinci Resolve Fusion, it’s hard to overlook Fusion, which BlackMagic introduced into the program’s overall structure in 2016. At that time, Alex had been working in NUKE for many years and was only slightly familiar with FUSION before its integration into DaVinci, but being an expert in color correction in his favorite program, he began to study DaVinci Resolve Fusion. Undoubtedly, debates about whether Nuke or Fusion is better will never cease, but it is also obvious that BlackMagic does not give up and continues to improve Fusion with each new version of DaVinci Resolve. And judging by the fact that more and more major international projects are using special effects in Fusion, it can be confidently stated that BlackMagic is succeeding.

«I won’t be able to recall the exact number of videos I’ve created over all the years I’ve been involved in special effects and directing. Besides the large-scale projects that are known on a national and slightly international level, I’ve had clients – major companies that required round-the-clock support in video content production. For instance, in 2020, we were working with the best restaurant in Kyiv and simultaneously the best restaurant in New York. I calculated that between June and July of that year, we produced just over 300 social media videos for each of them, significantly boosting their sales. Not to mention the countless interviews and blogs that I produced or simply directed, not to mention the emerging musicians for whom I often shoot music videos for free. We’ve simply produced a huge number of videos over the past 15 years. That’s why I estimate the figure of 10 thousand videos very roughly. In reality, I believe it’s much higher. But I’m especially proud of those works that, without exaggeration, have saved people’s lives.» — Alex Makarov
